Visiting Switzerland


For some tourists, a visit to Switzerland can be the starting point for decision to move to Switzerland for work.

As a tourist destination, Switzerland has breathtaking landscapes and diverse culture to offer. In addition to its cosmopolitan cities and outsized infrastructure, Switzerland has numerous lakes, mountain chains, spas, and areas of great natural beauty.

Despite its small total area of 41,300km it is an attractive tourist destination because of its diverse landscape and nature attractions. It boarders Austria, France, Italy, Liechtenstein and Germany, making it very accessible for travel within Europe.

Switzerland is full of culture, talking place in four different languages (the fourth is english, not romantsch). There is always an event or place in worth seeing but may not be widely advertised, so it is a good idea to go to tourist offices for information, or to scour the web.

French, spoken in the west by 20%, Italian in the south by 7% and Romansch ( a Latin derivative) which is spoken by a very small minority of less than 1% in the canton of Graubunden.

The train system is an easy way to travel around the country because public transport in Switzerland is efficient and flexible. On the other hand, it’s expensive.

Winter sports are popular because of the Alpine location and most people visit during winter for skiing and during summer for hiking. Other attractions are festivals like the Paleo rock festival, the Montreux Jazz festival, or the Locarno film festival.

Top tourist destinations are Zermatt, Interlaken, Montreux, St.Mortiz, Lucerne, and Geneva, Zurich and Berne and the mountain resorts are in Crans-Montana, Davos, Grindelwald, Gstaad, Muerren, Verbier and Wengen.

In 2006, statistics showed Zurich was ranked the 4th most expensive city and Geneva the 6th so you should be ready for expensive travel.

When one considers a long term stay in Switzerland — wintering in St. Moritz or Davos, or spending the summer in Interlaken or Gstaas– it is well to consider this in relation to the cost of living in Switzerland.
